I found, to my delight, that the Sony player would play 8 or 9 discs which, over the years, the Marantz player would always choke on in various ways. While that may be true in many cases, my current cheapo Sony universal player (a UDP X1100 es - $500) replaced an older Marantz player which was five times more expensive. Basically a more expensive unit will use more sophisticated firmware in order to play "iffy"CDs.
